The Great Shed Revamp

That's right, we have finally begun the great shed revamp, the first step in building what will eventually become the chicken coop!

We have a very old shed up near our cottage, it has needed tidying up since we moved in but has been far down the list of jobs to do, however Rich has promised me Chickens for my birthday (end of May!) and the only place for a good sized coop is on the concrete slab next to the shed. This however means that all the old ship lap that covers the front of the shed has to be removed, its old and a bit tatty and the gaps between the planks would be a nice breeding ground for lice, so we're replacing it with tight fitting tongue and groove. Here's Rich removing the old planks...

As the tongue and groove is being used outside it needed to be treated with something the keeps it weather proof, we decided on a coloured stain so from one slightly tatty brown shed to a lovely blue one...

It goes really nice against the Bath stone don't you think!

Above you can see the space where Rich will build the coop. Poor love, he does get asked to do the impossible by me sometimes! He was supposed to be building this with my Dad so sadly now its going to have to be a solo project. I have every faith in my lovely Husband, I'm sure he's going to make a brilliant job of it!

While Rich was making our shed look pretty, I was trying to tidy up our neglected pond. I think I've mentioned the pond before, it acts as a water butt for the run off from the roof of the cottage, I wish I could take credit for this great idea but it was the old couple who owned our house before us who installed it. Basically there's a splitter coming off the down pipe that then travels under the patio, through a flower bread and a rockery and out into the pond. I use it all summer to water the pots on the patio and every year we get a lot of frogs and newts in it (which I like to thinks keeps the slug population in check).

Over the last couple of years it has got very over grown, so the weekend was a perfect time to give it a much needed trim...

A vast improvement! and as I was clearing it this little chap came out from the weeds...

And lastly another little project that we will eventually get round to finishing is my new vegetable rack. Our cottage is tiny so storage of any kind is limited, and storing our crops is always tricky. I brought these lovely old apple bushels from the wonderful Gardenalia for the amazingly bargainus price of £7 each!!!

These will be sanded, wood worm treated and then made into a unit for storing, potatoes, onions ect...

Not sure when we'll get this finished, Rich and I both have books to finish up, and I'm running off for 2 weeks hols, I'll add it to the ever lengthening list!

Well done Rich - the shed looks fantastic. It's amazing what a lick of paint will do.

I love the pond - what a fantastic time-saving and clever idea!

There was a loud hissing and a yelp of pain; Neville had tried to sit on Crookshanks.
“I’m going to go and ask the driver what’s going on,” came Hermione’s voice. Harry felt her pass him, heard the door slide open again, and then a thud and two loud squeals of pain.
“Who’s that?”
“Who’s that?”
“Ginny?”
“Hermione?”

Draco Malfoy and Harry had been enemies ever since they had met on their very first train journey to Hogwarts. Malfoy, who had a pale, pointed, sneering face, was in Slytherin House; he played Seeker on the Slytherin Quidditch team, the same position that Harry played on the Gryffindor team. Crabbe and Goyle seemed to exist to do Malfoy’s bidding. They were both wide and musclely; Crabbe was taller, with a pudding-bowl haircut and a very thick neck; Goyle had short, bristly hair and long, gorilla-ish arms.

Personally, Harry was sure that Crookshanks had eaten Scab¬bers, and when he tried to point out to Hermione that the evidence all pointed that way, she lost her temper with Harry too.
“Okay, side with Ron, I knew you would!” she said shrilly. “First the Firebolt, now Scabbers, everything’s my fault, isn’t it! Just leave me alone, Harry, I’ve got a lot of work to do!”

“I know,” Harry panted. “We’ll take him up to the castle. We’ll hand him over to the dementors. … He can go to Azkaban … but don’t kill him.”
“Harry!” gasped Pettigrew, and he flung his arms around Harry’s knees. “You — thank you — it’s more than I deserve — thank you —”
“Get off me,” Harry spat, throwing Pettigrew’s hands off him in disgust. “I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing it because — I don’t reckon my dad would’ve wanted them to become killers — just for you.”

The veela had started to dance, and Harry’s mind had gone com¬pletely and blissfully blank. All that mattered in the world was that he kept watching the veela, because if they stopped dancing, terri¬ble things would happen. …
And as the veela danced faster and faster, wild, half-formed thoughts started chasing through Harry’s dazed mind. He wanted to do something very impressive, right now. Jumping from the box into the stadium seemed a good idea … but would it be good enough?
“Harry, what are you doing?” said Hermione’s voice from a long way off.
The music stopped. Harry blinked. He was standing up, and one of his legs was resting on the wall of the box. Next to him, Ron was frozen in an attitude that looked as though he were about to dive from a springboard.

Bill got to his feet, smiling, and also shook Harry’s hand. Bill came as something of a surprise. Harry knew that he worked for the wizarding bank, Gringotts, and that Bill had been Head Boy at Hogwarts; Harry had always imagined Bill to be an older version of Percy: fussy about rule-breaking and fond of bossing everyone around. However, Bill was — there was no other word for it — cool. He was tall, with long hair that he had tied back in a ponytail. He was wearing an earring with what looked like a fang dangling from it. Bill’s clothes would not have looked out of place at a rock concert, except that Harry recognized his boots to be made, not of leather, but of dragon hide.
